COLORADO FIRST ● FIRST Tech Challenge

FIRST Tech Challenge

FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) is a robotics program for students in grades 7–12 that combines engineering, programming, and teamwork in a competitive, hands-on environment.

Teams of up to 15 students work together with adult mentors to design, build, program, and test a robot to compete in a new game released each season. Robots are built using a reusable, industrial-style robotics platform and must fit within an 18 in. × 18 in. × 18 in. sizing constraint. Throughout the season, students develop engineering, programming, problem-solving, and leadership skills while applying the FIRST Core Values.

The season culminates in a series of competitions where teams compete in exciting head-to-head matches, present their engineering work to judges, and celebrate innovation, teamwork, and technical excellence.

MISSION

Inspire Colorado Students

Through robotics, STEM, mentorship, and teamwork

FIRST® Tech Challenge is way more than building robots. FIRST Tech Challenge teams (up to 15 team members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format.

Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team.

The robot kit is reusable from year to year and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. Teams design and build robots, raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach to earn specific awards. Participants are eligible to apply for $80M+ in college scholarships.

Season Resource Center

Nothing on Earth thrives in isolation. Every gene, species, and ecosystem are woven into a vibrant network of biodiversity that sustains the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food that nourishes us.

The 2026-27 Biodiversity themed season will encourage students to use STEM as their guide and nature as their inspiration, allowing today’s innovators to discover creative ways to strengthen the systems that support life on our planet.
